DIPLOMA IN ENGLISH
1ST INTAKE

The Diploma in English is a one-year weekend program, designed for those employed in the public and private sectors and also for school leavers. The program provides the necessary advanced language skills for those in employment whose professional advancement in the English language would be essential and for those who seek employment opportunities. Department of Languages and Communication Studies, Trincomalee Campus offers this program in response to growing demand from students and professionals along with the feedback of the target groups.

Objectives of the Diploma Programme

  • It enables the participants to acquire a good command of English which will equip them with competency and proficiency in the target language.
  • It would help the participants to gain confidence and applying the language skills particularly when:
    • expressing themselves at public and private forums.
    • making presentations.
    • dealing with day-to-day activities.
    • writing formal letters and informal letters.
    • writing project proposals and reports.
    • creating an opportunity for professionals and school leavers to continue their English education and develop their language skills in the target language.

Entry Requirement

    • A pass in the general certificate of education (advanced level) or an equivalent qualification,

OR

    • A foundation course equivalent to SLQF level 2 after a minimum of 12 years of schooling followed by passing an aptitude test,

OR

    • Completion of NVQF level 4 or accredited work experience or accredited prior learning followed by a corresponding cognitive bridging program of a minimum of 30 credits as determined by the academic authority of the HEI concerned may also be considered as equivalent qualification for admission to SLQF level 3 in a particular field of specialization.

AND

    • An ‘s’ pass in the general English language at G.C.E A/L.

OR

    • An ‘s’ pass in the general English language at G.C.E O/L with a pass at the (national) certificate in English by a recognized government institution.

OR

  • Any other professional or academic qualification which would be accepted by the senate and the council of the university.

  7. ENG 1171 Introduction to English Literature I

First Year Second Semester (15 Credits)

  1. ENG 1211 Vocabulary Development II
  2. ENG 1222 Reading for Comprehension II
  3. ENG 1233 Language Structure, Grammar & Linguistics II
  4. ENG 1243 Professional Writing II
  5. ENG 1252 Listening & Speech II
  6. ENG 1262 Oral Communication Skills II
  7. ENG 1272 Introduction to English Literature II

Send to the below address on or before the closing date.
